Will Brexit Mean Death for Current EU Trademark Laws

Currently, British based companies and business -operators benefit greatly from EU wide trademark registrations. The protection given covers all current 28 member states of the EU, plus any others who join in the future (as long as your TM remains up to date and registered.

Brexit has caused a lot of concern with many offering differing proposals as to how the issues may be approached. The UK is due to leave the EU in March 2019 according to the triggering of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - the so called 'get out clause'.

However, as many commentators have stated, if the UK ceases to be part of the EU and the laws/ provisions currently available, what will happen to existing TMs, registered up until 2019. Will they remain in place, or will there then be a need to re-register the Tm in 27 separate countries? In a word, we dont know yet and there are no firm proposals being put forward by either the UK Government, or the EU Commission.
